When I think about games with fun and unique concepts, Flipnic is one that comes to mind pretty much immediately. At it's core, flipnic really is just a pinball game with a few unique mechanics/minigames here and there to mix up different segments and reward you with bonus points when you complete them. The part that really sets flipnic apart from other pinball games is it's scale, the boards are huge and there's a lot of missions to do in each one similar to a lot of normal pinball machines. They range from simple score bonuses for completing them to "super missions" which can change the entire board and progress the game.
Just for one example: On the first board "biology", there's an area with 5 bumpers. Each time you hit a bumper for the first time, a butterfly flutters in and sits on it. Covering every bumper in butterflies triggers the event "freeze over", which afterwards the game announces you can open a new area. By throwing the pinball into a waterfall that froze in the main area, you can smash through it to access a new area.
That's just one example, there are five different boards all full of stuff like this (some better than others)
Flipnic is an odd one. For the longest time I couldn't tell if the game never got much attention because it wasn't advertised much at all or if it was because the idea of a pinball game on the ps2 didn't resonate with many audiences. Upon replaying it more recently I can say it was probably a combination of the two as well as the fact that it just...wasn't as great as I remember, but it was still far from bad.
Something I noticed that was further brought to my attention was the game had 3 different publishers over 3 different releases in 3 years. Originally released as a Japan excusive in 2003, published by Sony themselves. Then released in PAL regions in 2004, published by Ubisoft. Then finally in 2005 it made it to NA regions, published by Capcom.
Maybe that's just a small look into why the game never took off, or at least why I've never met someone else who has at least heard of it. I couldn't find too much information on it but it seemed to be a troubled release...
